I was asked by the curator Derek Zietsman, to participate in this show. He chose the below four recent woodcuts of mine.
There is a Buffalo on the Roof comments on our socially and politically dysfunctional society. Here the buffalo finds itself in an unnatural and threatening environment where he faces the ecological disaster together with us.
Limping Buffalo is a metaphor for the state and a social comment on events associated with the #Feesmustfall student unrest in 2016. .90x60cm Woodcut
Dark Street reflects my engagement with an area adjacent to my studio. My aim was to echo its sense of unease, foreboding and discomfort.
Waiting is based on things I see and people I come into contact with whilst walking through the town’s hustle and bustle (to my studio). I am interested in the gritty underbelly of my city rather than the “surf-city –holiday destination” image commonly associated with Durban.
All prints are 60 x 90 cm on Fabriano Rosapina paper and dated 2017. Editions are limited to 10
